Okay, let start by speaking of oil pulling.

Couple years ago, when my facial skin started to break out, I turned to my trusted natural remedies to relief, soothe and stop my breakouts. During my research of different natural remedies, up came coconut oil and its use of oil pulling as a way to fight bacteria in the skin.

A method I found hard to understand and was very much skeptical to use since my skin was sensitive and problematic. The use and thought of oils on my face was to remain far from the thought of curiosity.

But, hey, you know what they say. “Don’t knock it until you’ve tried it”

So I did. After consistent use, its positive and favorable results were evident. The changes in my skin texture, complexion and breakouts, resulted in me being an avid user and believer to present, of the miracles of using coconut oil to oil pull or oil cleanse.

THE SCIENCE BEHIND OIL PULLING AND WHY YOU SHOULD OIL PULL AND OIL CLEANSE

Oil desolves oil.

WHAT IS OIL PULLING

Oil pulling or oil cleansing is basically the use of oils to draw out toxins and harmful bacteria from the body and skin. Coconut oil contains anti fungal, anti inflammatory and anti bacterial properties, as a result, it is highly used in this process.

1. How to use coconut oil to oil pull or oil cleanse the face.

It is pretty simple. Oh, did I mentioned it is cost effective as well.

(used in its solid or liquid form doesn’t matter, it’s the same oil) – home made or store bought organic cold pressed extra virgin coconut oil.

  • Rub oil in the palms of the hand to warm/desolve the oil, just enough to quote the face and neck so there’s not oil running down.
  • On dry, unwashed skin, rub for 1-2 minutes
  • Before removing, I like placing a warm face cloth on my face to stimulate and open the pores.
  • Gently wipe oil off with cloth and wahla. You’ve completed your coconut oil cleansing and oil pulling session. Proceed with the rest of your skin care steps.

2. USING COCONUT OIL FOR ORAL HEALTH CARE

Yes, I use coconut oil for my oral hygiene. This is actually an ayurvedic remedy which has been around for ages. I swish coconut oil in my mouth first thing every morning. Crazy you say? Nope. Just a highly OCD individual who loves taking care of herself. Be it in its solid or liquid form, I place approx. two tea spoons in my mouth before brushing, swish swach, spit and proceed to brushing my teeth.

It’s a fact, as we sleep bacterial and toxins from our body builds up in our mouth.

Streptococcus mutans is the main bacteria found in our mouth and cause of bad breath, tooth decay and the buildup of plaque.

It’s important we prevent these from re-entering our bodies and causing harm. I swish the oil back and forth, round and round insuring it goes between my teeth attaching itself to and bacteria and toxins which, if left can cause cavity, gingivitis, build up of plaque etc. No mama, I’m not here for that.

Who doesn’t like and want fresh breath, white teeth and healthy gums?
  • As someone who suffer with extreme teeth sensitivity, doing my coconut oil rinse definitely reliefs and soothes my pains and gums.
Okay, I hear you.

As mentioned above, used in its solid or liquid form doesn’t matter, it’s the same oil.

  • Apply 1-2 teaspoons of oil to unbrushed mouth and swish for approx 15-20 min. If you are thinking it sounds like a long time, it isn’t. If you do, during your morning bath or even getting ready for your day, the time would fly.

It’s important you oil pull on unclean mouth so the oil has bacteria to hold on to. If used after you eat, you would have already transported the toxins and bacteria into your body.

  • Spit out (I usually do this in a trash bag or disposable bottle or cup. When expelling the oil form your mouth you shouldn’t expel into the sink as this can cause the sink too clog over time.
  • Proceed to brush your teeth as usual. Please do not forget to scrub the tongue and floss.

HOW LONG SHOULD YOU OIL PULL AND START SEEING RESULTS?

Within two weeks of consistent use result would be shown. Afterwards, you can lessen to 2-3 times per week if you find the everyday process to be time consuming.

Hey, thanks much for stopping by. As mentioned in the post, you can’t go wrong with Grandma’s DIY homemade organic coconut oil. But there are lots of trusted certified organic brands (most would state on the labels). Those that are store bought would contain ingredients to preserve and lengthen its shelf life (it all depends on the type, strength/amount of the preserved ingredients).

Do let me know how your chosen method goes, if tried.

  3. The coconut is so versatile. I love everything about coconut and I use it in every way possible.
